why i’ve converted to gagaism. PART ONE:

December 29, 2009

My first female fashion/rock idol was Gwen Stefani… a girl amongst the guys, the front woman of one of my favorite bands, feminine.. fashionable, hanging out with her brother’s friends.. something I feel I did, (or tried to do?) a lot.

I’ve always gotten a long with boys better than girls, yet I am woman, rawr. I guess I was kinda tom-boyish as a kid, but my favorite colors were definitely pink and purple; I’d take the teenage mutant ninja turtles over my little pony.. and beer over a mixed drink any day, but I definitely don’t dislike girly things, I have a distinct memory of being very sick once, and my brother bringing me home a my little pony movie from the video store.. and I was pretty much over joyed.  I suppose I’m a bit androgynous in my personality. I’m a recovering WoW addict, I’ve always been a Star Trek fan (I’ve always wanted to name my son Jean-Luc), I thoroughly enjoy cooking, cleaning, and sewing, I’ve always had the instinct to mother. I drink beer, I burp, I enjoy hot women… I’ve always enjoyed fashion, and I like looking good. I giggle and obsess over boys, I played with Barbies, but I also spent a lot of time in the garage hitting things with hammers, making who knows what out of scrap wood and nails…

After Gwen came Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. cute, crazy, and oh man.. those outfits. I’ve long stated that Karen O is in some way, my alter ego.. and that I cannot be a rock star, simply for the fact that Karen O exists… I’d be her clone. Haha. Now, that’s really only partially true.. I am a “chameleon” after all, right? That being said.. Karen O’s enthusiasm on stage is definitely something you’d see reflected in rock star me, way back before I knew of her I was rocking and bopping and hippin’ and hopping all around my bedroom Karen O style.

Then there was Kathleen Hanna in my feminist phase (we share the same birthday squee!) and of course Patricia Day of the Horrorpops  in my Rockabilly/Psychobilly phase… not too many leading females in the Reggae genre… but I’ve been fascinated with “Ruca“, from the Sublime song. Peaches and Miss Kitten when I first discovered Electroclash, Tegan and Sara at the beginning of Indie Rock, Yelle and Dragonette for Electropop… I could go on.

And now, well, now there is GaGa.

A brief list of who GaGa is being compared to, and who she’s inspired by/idolizes:

  • Gwen Stefani (ahem. :D)
  • Bowie (I am beyond in love with this man)
  • Andy Warhol (one of my favorite people on the planet)
  • Queen (listened to them obsessively growing up.)
  • Micheal Jackson
  • Madonna
  • Debbie Harry
  • Grace Jones
  • Donatella Versace
  • “I’m inspired by fashion. I’m inspired by the moonlight. I’m inspired by sex and pornography and slasher films.”

I’m sold. This woman is already a legend. She’s adorable, unique, clever, talented and gorgeous. As if this wasn’t enough, I’ve got more…
